Burn the Incense Before You Pour the Wine

Long day?

You walk through the door, drop your keys and think:

We understand.

There’s something wonderfully civilized about pouring a glass at the end of a brutal workday. But before you reach for the corkscrew, try something.

Burn the incense first.

Not because we’re declaring war on happy hour. Nobody needs that kind of negativity.

But sometimes what we’re really craving at 6:12 p.m. isn’t a drink.

It’s a change of state.

We want the noise to stop. We want the shoulders to drop. We want our brain to understand that the meetings, deadlines, traffic and people who “just need five minutes” are officially finished for the day.

So create that moment first.

Put the phone down. Change out of your work clothes. Turn on some music. Light a favorite incense and give yourself ten quiet minutes.

No emails. No chores. No decisions.

Then decide whether you still want the wine.

Maybe you do.

Excellent. Pour it.

But now the glass of wine isn’t responsible for doing all the heavy lifting. It becomes part of an evening you’re already enjoying rather than the starting gun for relaxation.

And some nights, you may discover you wanted the ritual more than you wanted the drink.

Either way, you’ve given yourself something far more valuable than happy hour:

A deliberate ending to your day.

Burn the incense.

Then pour the wine.

Your workday ends here.

Enjoy the Zen.
