Still Thinking About Work at 9 PM? Try This.
It’s 9:07 p.m.
You’re home. Dinner is over. You’re sitting comfortably on the couch.
And somehow, Kevin from accounting is sitting there with you.
Not literally, hopefully.
But you’re replaying his email. Thinking about tomorrow’s meeting. Wondering whether you finished that report. Mentally solving a problem nobody is paying you to solve at 9:07 p.m.
For mentally overloaded working adults, leaving work and actually stopping work are two very different things.
Try creating a simple shutdown ritual.
Pick a time when work officially becomes tomorrow’s problem. Put the phone down. Close the laptop. Light a favorite incense. Pour some tea, wine or whatever signals my time to you.
Then give yourself ten minutes without an objective.
No news. No email. No “quick check” of tomorrow’s schedule.
And definitely no Kevin.
Instead, pay attention to what’s around you. The fragrance in the room. Music playing. Incense smoke curling through the air. The fact that nobody currently needs a spreadsheet from you.
You’re creating a boundary between work mode and life mode.
Tomorrow morning, the emails will still be there. The meetings will still happen. The problems will patiently wait for your return.
They’re remarkably loyal that way.
But tonight?
Tonight belongs to you.
Your workday ends here.
Enjoy the Zen.
